Dr M: I've never seen such strong Chinese support for me

GE14 | Dr Mahathir Mohamad may have been prime minister for 22 years but he had never seen the kind of Chinese support he is getting today.

In an interview with Singapore's Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily, Mahathir, who now leads the Pakatan Harapan opposition coalition, related the positive reaction he had been getting from the Chinese community.

"I have never seen such strong Chinese support, very strong. Nowadays, they even shout 'Long live Tun' in Chinese.

"They want to shake hands and all that. I think the Chinese tsunami will still be there," he said.

Mahathir, who also leads the Malay nationalist Bersatu, is seeking to also generate a "Malay Tsunami" for Harapan.

The former premier claimed that Harapan can even win a two-thirds majority if there was no cheating, citing examples of gerrymandering and problems with the electoral roll.

In the interview, Mahathir also issued a special message in Malay to Malaysians in Singapore.

"I hope Malaysian who are living or working in Singapore will return home on April 9, Wednesday to vote in Malaysia.

"It is not a public holiday (in Singapore) but I believe the 14th general election is very important for the future of Malaysia and they should care and return to Malaysia and vote," he said.

Mahathir also spoke about his relationship with the late former Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, describing them "like brothers".

"Between brothers, there will be problems... That does not mean we are enemies," he said.

Mahathir said his relationship with Singapore then was not as cordial now as Malaysia had given in to many of Singapore's demands.

"On a personal term, without politics, we can be good friends but over politics, it's different.

"I have to say what I think is right and he has his own view, and quite often his views and mine were not the same.

"But the two of us are the same in terms of Asian values. He believes in Asian values and I believe in Asian values. So there are some similarities between us that people don't notice," he said.
